This Children's Privacy Notice does not apply to the practices of any third-party websites or services that may be accessed through MyEdSpace's Services. If your Child clicks on links to other websites, we encourage you to review those websites' privacy notices to understand what they do with information they collect.
Your Child uses our Services to complete courses and receive instruction to support their schoolwork. This Children's Privacy Notice tells you how we collect and use information about your Child.
Important information for parents and guardians
We only collect and use personal information from Children that is not subject to an exception under COPPA when we have verifiable parental consent. Before a Child can use our platform, a parent or guardian must complete the sign-up process and provide verifiable consent. If you believe we have collected personal information from a Child without verifiable parental consent, please contact us immediately at privacy@myedspace.com.
The information we collect from Children
We may collect the following information from Children in the context of using our Services:
Registration and Account Information. Once you provide verifiable parental consent, your Child may create an account and provide us with their name, email address, and grade level. When your Child creates their account profile, they may also provide us with their address and date of birth.
Communications. If your Child contacts us directly with a question or request, we collect the information in your Child's message and any contact information your Child may provide.
Contact Forms. Children who contact us directly through one of our contact forms, including to book a call, reserve a spot in a course, or find the right course, will be asked to provide information such as their parent's first and last name, parent's email address, parent's phone number, whether they are a parent or student, grade level that they're in, information about courses they are taking in school, and their reason for seeking support.
Location Information. When your Child uses our Services, we receive your Child's location information. For example, we infer your Child's location information by using your Child's IP address.
Device Information. We receive information about the device and software your Child uses to access our Services, including IP address, device type, device identifiers, and web browser type and version.
User Content. We receive content your Child creates when using our Services, including homework and coursework responses. In addition, we receive the contents of messages your Child sends to and receives from teachers and mentors, as well as information about those messages, such as when they were sent or received.
Usage Information. We automatically receive information about your Child's interactions with our Services, like the pages or other content they view, referrer information (the website your Child visited before coming to our Services), the dates and times of your Child's visits, session logs, and crash reports.
Study Aid Interaction Information. When your Child uses our Study Aid feature, your Child may submit text, audio, images, video, documents, and other materials to the Services (“Prompts”), which generate responses based on your Child's Prompts (“Outputs”). Before a Prompt is sent to our AI service provider, we use automated measures to remove personally identifying information, such as your Child's name, and assign a random identifier to your Child's Prompt. We collect information your Child chooses to provide in your Prompts and this information may be reproduced in the Outputs. We also collect information about your Child's usage counts, safeguarding flags, and feedback flags.
Research and Attainment Information. With your consent, your Child may provide us with information about their test scores and exam results, which we will collect and use for research purposes to understand our students' performances and improve our lessons.
How we use the information we collect from Children
We use the information we collect from your child for the following purposes:
- To provide, maintain, improve, and enhance our Services;
- To develop, test, and improve how our Services use artificial intelligence; for example, by refining the instructions, prompts, and configurations we provide to the AI models that support our Services. We do not use your personal information to train the underlying AI models.
- To personalize your Child's experience on our Services such as by providing tailored content and recommendations, unless you opt out;
- To understand and analyze how your Child uses our Services and develop new products, services, features, and functionality;
- To communicate with your Child, provide your Child with updates and other information relating to our Services, provide information that your Child requests, respond to comments and questions, and otherwise provide customer support;
- To generate anonymized or aggregate data containing only de-identified, non-personal information that we may use and disclose for any lawful purposes such as to conduct research or publish reports;
- To send your Child text messages;
- To find and prevent fraud and abuse, and respond to trust and safety issues that may arise; and
- For compliance purposes, including enforcing our Terms of Service or other legal rights, or as may be required by applicable laws and regulations or requested by any judicial process or governmental agency.
How we disclose the information we collect from Children
We disclose the information we collect from your child in the following circumstances:
Vendors and Service Providers. We may disclose any information we receive to vendors and service providers retained in connection with the provision of our Services.
AI Service Providers. We may disclose information we receive to vendors that provide artificial intelligence services that provide backend support for our Services, including Anthropic (via Amazon Web Services, U.S. regions), which processes pseudonymized information from your Child to generate educational responses in our Study Aid feature, and Langfuse, which stores conversation logs for safety monitoring. Neither of these providers may use your data to train AI models.
Teachers and Mentors. Our teachers and mentors receive messages and responses to homework or coursework relevant to their course.
Research Partners. With your consent, we provide your Child's personal information to our university research partners to conduct research on learning outcomes.
As Required By Law and Similar Disclosures. We may access, preserve, and disclose your information if we believe doing so is required or appropriate to: (i) comply with law enforcement requests and legal process, such as a court order or subpoena; (ii) respond to you or your Child's requests; or (iii) protect your, your Child's, our, or others' rights, property, or safety. For the avoidance of doubt, the disclosure of your Child's information may occur if your Child posts any objectionable content on or through the Services.
Merger, Sale, or Other Asset Transfers. We may transfer your Child's information to service providers, advisors, potential transactional partners, or other third parties in connection with the consideration, negotiation, or completion of a corporate transaction in which we are acquired by or merged with another company or we sell, liquidate, or transfer all or a portion of our assets. The use of your Child's information following any of these events will be governed by the provisions of this Children's Privacy Notice in effect at the time the applicable information was collected.
We do not sell your Child's personal information or use it for advertising directed at your Child personally. We do not share personal information with third parties for their own marketing purposes. We do not make your Child's personal information available to the public.
Personalization
We collect information to personalize your Child's learning experience using our AI tools, unless you opt out. Where we personalize your Child's learning, our AI tools will create a digital profile of your Child and gather information about your Child's learning process and responses to questions. We use this to suggest resources and learning paths suited to your Child. To opt out of personalization for your Child, please contact our Customer Support team at hello@myedspace.com. If you opt out, we will not provide a personalized program from that point, though we may keep records of previous personalized learning.
The Study Aid
We have a feature called the Study Aid, which lets your Child ask questions about their subjects and receive educational answers. The Study Aid is an AI chatbot – a computer program that generates responses. It is not a human, and every response it gives your Child will be labeled “AI generated” to remind your Child that they are not interacting with a human.
The Study Aid is an opt-in feature, so you will be asked to provide verifiable parental consent before your Child can use it for the first time.
What happens when your Child uses the Study Aid?
When your Child types a question into the Study Aid:
- Your Child's question is assigned a random ID code before it is sent anywhere.
- We use automated measures to remove personally identifying information from your Child's question (like your Child's name) before it is processed by the AI service provider.
- Your Child's question is sent to our AI service provider, Claude, operated by Anthropic. Anthropic processes your Child's information on our behalf using Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States. Anthropic is prohibited from using your Child's information to train its AI models.
- Your Child's question and the AI's answer are saved in our system so your Child can refer to previous conversations. We retain Study Aid conversation history for two academic years following your Child's last use of the Services.
- A separate record of the conversation is also kept in a logging system called Langfuse, based in the EU, for safety and security monitoring. We retain this for the same period.
The number of messages your Child can send is limited depending on your subscription tier.
The Study Aid is not a teacher. It is a study aid to help you alongside your lessons. It can make mistakes, so always check important information with your Child's teacher.
What if my Child says something that worries us?
We have automatic systems that monitor Study Aid conversations for signs that your Child might be struggling or in distress. If our system detects something concerning, it will provide your Child with details of support services (such as the Crisis Text Line and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and will alert a member of our welfare team. A trained member of staff will review the conversation. They may contact you, or in serious cases, they may disclose information to child protective services or law enforcement. We disclose information outside MyEdSpace where we believe it is necessary to keep your Child or someone else safe.
Feedback
There is a thumbs up / thumbs down button on every Study Aid response. Your Child can use it to tell us whether a response was helpful. We use this feedback, along with the related Study Aid conversation, to review response quality and to improve how the Study Aid works; for example, by refining and testing the instructions (known as “prompts”) and settings we give to the AI model so that it produces better educational responses. We do not use your Child's information to train the underlying AI models, and our AI service providers are prohibited from doing so.
Can I delete my Child's Study Aid conversations?
Yes. You or your Child can ask us to delete your Child's Study Aid conversation history at any time by contacting us at privacy@myedspace.com.
Data retention
We retain information for only as long as is reasonably necessary to fulfill the specific purposes for which the information was collected, which are disclosed above. We retain much of your Child's information for two academic years following your Child's last use of the Services. If your Child has used the Study Aid and a safeguarding concern was recorded, we retain that record for as long as reasonably necessary to respond to the concern; to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims relating to it; or as required under applicable law.
Parent and guardian rights
You have the right to:
- Refuse further collection or use of your Child's personal information, including withdrawing consent for your Child's use of the Study Aid.
- Have us delete your Child's personal information, or a specific section of it, such as your Child's Study Aid conversation history.
- Review the personal information we have collected from your Child.
To exercise these rights, please write to us at: privacy@myedspace.com.
Updating this Privacy Notice
We may update this Children's Privacy Notice from time to time. When we do, we will post any adjustments to the Children's Privacy Notice on this page, and the revised version will be effective when it is posted. Where required by COPPA, we will notify you directly.
